Artist Bob Larkin with Hidalgo Trading Company founder Chuck Welch at Doc Con 2014.
In 1976, (Len) Leone kept his word with several paperback assignments for (Bob) Larkin. By that time, Larkin’s career was in full swing. His art had graced the covers of other paperback companies, comic covers, movie posters, advertising, and more. That year, Larkin’s dream assignment opened when Boris Vallejo was released as the Bantam Doc Savage cover artist. For the remainder of the Bantam Reprint run, Doc Savage fans were treated to 47 Bob Larkin covers. That includes the Fortress of Solitude half of the 22/23 double novel. Larkin didn’t continue when Bantam started printing new Doc Savage novels penned by Will Murray, but the artist is still painting for other clients. — Courtney Rogers in Bronze Gazette
