  1. Another great Doc with a very eerie start that leads to a non-stop romp. No one gets killed in this one, but there’s so much action it doesn’t dawn on the reader until Monk mentions that fact near the end! Superb Bama cover on the paperback. Would love to have a poster of it.

  2. It has been many years since I’ve read this one.My first surprize was
that it was from that golden year of ’34’.I think this one has been under noticed. It dos’nt seem to get as much play as other super Docs.Perhaps its the lack of a supervillian or world threatning device.I rank it very high as a Doc.I think I like it so much because it seems to be a more ‘real’Doc adventure.I must say Dent painted a very spooky image of the Wash.

  6. This is really an enjoyable read. Not a super-saga by any means, but it is a fun story from start to finish.

  7. “The Sea Magician” is a third string Doc tale that’s only redeemed by what turns out to be a very clever scheme by the villains in the last pages. That being said, the story leading up to the climax is fairly tedious and Doc himself is not featured in most of it. Unless you’re a die-hard fan, skip this one.

  8. I found this adventure to be pretty tame by most Doc standards. The action is spaced out and Doc really doesn’t get heavily involved until near the end of the tale. Don’t get me wrong, this is still a good read and one any Doc fan should enjoy. It has an interesting plotline, it just takes a little while to get through to the meat of it. The final chapters have some classic Monk and Ham interactions.

  9. One more quick note, the “chief’s” reveal at the end of the story is very shrewdly done. A nice change of pace from the prior novels, even though I thought it was pretty obvious at that point who the mastermind was.
