Novel Submission Order

Doc Savage fans are a particular lot.
Some have read the novels in the order they were published by Bantam. Some insist a better method is to read them in the order they were originally published. The latest “best order” is to read the novels in the order they were “submitted to Street and Smith.” Guess who has that order for you?

  1. It’s great that you’ve published the submission order. If the submission order is the same as “written order” then I’d agree it is also the best reading order.
To make the list completely helpful, it would be great if you could also list the publication and Bantam order numbers along side the list for cross reference purposes.
    Thanks.

  2. This is a great list !!! Just one question… Where did #179, IN HELL, MADONNA, come from? It’s not on any list I have previously studied. They all included only 181 adventures. This includes the list in Philip Jose Farmer’s DOC SAVAGE: HIS APOCOLYPTIC LIFE.

  3. This is in response to James Thorpe who wants to know where to find DOC SAVAGE novels.
I can’t help if he is looking for the actual pulps or paperbacks, but http://www.blackmask.com has all 181 adventures in e-text form. These are scans of the original pulp texts.
    Hope this helps.

  4. Chuck, excellent list. I’m out of column space (!!) in my sortable list (http://www.duskbeforethedawn.net/larrys-little-lists/pulp-fiction/) or I would just to answer Sam’s question above.
Do you (or anyone) know what the rhyme or reason for the Bantam order is? I’ve sorted my list every way I can think of, but I still see no relation of the Bantam list to the original publication order or this submission order.
    Great site!

  5. “The Frightened Fish” was never published in magazine form, but it was the story Dent was working on when the magazine was cancelled, and it was later published as a paperback. I believe that it should be added to the list, and not treated as are the rest of the Farmer/Murray additions.

  6. This may be useful. I’m currently reading every one, one per month, in original order, 75 years after first publication. It may be necessary to jigger the order a bit.
    And the site looks great.

  7. Also, Sanctum Books reprinted “In Hell, Madonna”, along with the interior artwork that had been created for it, but never seen before.
